SUGAR EDIT

Fashion Photography

1)   When is an image a Portrait? When is it a fashion photograph? Are the two the Same?

A portrait is more focused on the face and what the person emotions are whilst a fashion photo is focused on the clothes and the accessories not the actual person or their personality.

2) To what degree should an image manipulated to go into a fashion magazine?

The degree of manipulation should only be the background and the lighting or lighting affects. It should not be used to change a person features to make them look perfect because as it is tampering with that person identity. That person should be left alone, what we look like is what we look like and  no one should be able to change our  features. On the other side of the argument  fashion is all about the best look and food company's do edit there photo's .This makes the food look delicious and this is what fashion is doing but with people. Personally I think it is wrong as it is changing  human beings to look as good as possible and our looks should not be changed.

3) is there a clash between the creative and commercial side of fashion Photography?

There is a clear clash between commercial and creative. creative wants fashion to be like art, they want the best photos and best looking dresses and accessories. The commercial do want the product to look great but they want it to appeal to there target audience. They choose what they think bests appeals to there target audience. The creative side do fight for there photos and dress to be either shown in the next magazine or the next dress design. Commercial win this battle as they have the power to say what goes or stays. The creative do try and reason with the commercial but in the end the commercial side  have the final say. So this proves that commercial does win the battle between commercial and creative.

    Portraiture

Diana Arbus
Walker Evans
Richard Avedon
Tony Viccaro
Larry Clarke

Portraiture is a type of photography which is used these days as id. For example passports and driving licences. In the past portraits where made for  rich and famous  people who could afford portraits during this time. The portraits shows only what the owner wants it to show. One of the photographers who took portraits was Tony Viccaro who took a secretive approach to taking portraits. He would wait until the celebrities would wait till they drop their mask. he would wait until they would not expect a picture to be taken of them. Once they dropped their mask he would use a decisive shot. This is a  shot that is not planned or created it is a natural and  it is at that moment. Tony used this to capture the true version of them and not a put on face as they would usually put on when they are in front of a camera. A way he would do this he would pretend the camera was not working and the celebrity would drop their mask and reveal their true face and identity. This was different as other photographers like Diana Arbus  they weren't as secret as Tony was they took photos of celebrities or rich people . to show them truthfully but they didn't use the decisive shot like Tony Viccaro did.

These are some examples of portraits from Tony Vaccaro and he used his decisive moment to capture this portraits and they show the person acting or posing he would make them drop their guard and take these sudden shots .

Eddie Adams photo vs video

The image is more shocking  as you don't know  why the person  is pointing a gun at a random person and there is an element of  surprise as you don't know the background of the photo. The video tells the background and why the  hostage is being taken hostage. In the image it looks like the guy is threatening  but actually the video shows that the hostage has been shot on the spot. This does  make it shocking knowing that the guy has been shot on the spot even though he surrendered but I think the image is more shocking than the video. The photo has been captured at the exactly right time and if you didn't know that the hostage has been shot than you think it is a hostage situation.

Introduction
Robert Capa and Tony Vaccaro where photographers during world war 2 . Robert Capra worked for life magazine , his main mission was to take photos of hero's. He choose which battles he went to so he could take pictures the camera he used was the Leica.

Tony Vaccaro was a soldier he took pictures of death his photos were based on how dreadful war was  as he was a soldier. He couldn't choose battles as he was a soldier , he also had to survive    before he could take the pictures. The camera he used was the Argus C3 which was his own camera  as the army's camera was useless as it took 3 to 4 Min's for it to take a picture.

Who did they work for?
Robert Capra worked for life magazine

Tony Vaccaro worked as soldier

How did this affect there work?

This affected their work because Robert had more freedom than tony as he worked for a magazine.  Robert could  choose which battles he went to ,whilst Tony was a soldier so he had a lot less freedom than Robert. he was a soldier so  he had to go were the army wanted him to go not where he wanted to go . He also had to fight first then take photos after. Robert had more money then Tony so he could afford the leica. Which was the ultimate camera of that time. Whilst tony got given  a camera which was useless as it took 3 to 4 minutes to take a capture. He took his own camera which was a Argus C3 however most of tony pictures where of dead Americans. for this reason most of his photos got deleted.

Where there photos true to war?

Robert and Tony's pictures were true to war but they took a different  perspective  of war . Whilst Robert was taking pictures of hero's and heroic moments tony was taking photos of the devastation .   this is the reason why tony pictures where deleted as America didn't want to show dead Americans .

My Final Thought:

My thoughts on Tony Vaccara is that he took photos to show how bad and much destruction this particular war caused . Whilist Robert  took pictures to show hero's and heroic moments.
